Infrastructure
The level of thought and detail put into the design and construction of the infrastructure of Katafanga Island Resort is nothing short of amazing. To date, roughly 8.5 Million* US dollars has been spent on infrastructure alone.
The solutions to the challenges of island operation were carefully planned for optimal building placement for reliable long term maintenance and operation. All aspects of the infrastructure were purposely overbuilt to accommodate future growth. Nothing will need to be enlarged or rebuilt when the island resort is expanded with additional over water rooms and the private villas from lot sales.
There are 17 miles of underground cable that service all of the island's facilities including water, electrical, telephone and internet connections. With easy expansion capability when additional accommodations or facilities are needed.
There are 4.5 miles of solid road encircling the island. Much of this road was built through controlled blasting. The debris was then crushed by the island's own rock crusher and used to fill and level the road around the island.

The current airstrip is 3,380 feet long and could be extended another 1600 feet to accommodate jets and some larger aircraft.
The airplane hangar currently holds 3 stories of construction material which is much of the inventory needed to complete the development. All the stored material is inventoried and cataloged
so its exact location within the facility can easily be found.
Two huge jetties have been created for the marina area of the island. Once complete these will provide protected dockage at the island for all manner of boats. These piers are plumbed with water, power and fuel to service the visiting yachts and also the resort's own diving and fishing vessels. The plumbing also allows for filling of the fuel tanks directly from the tanker to the connection at the end of the pier.
A full dive shop and support area will be located near the marina.
A large supply of heavy equipment is included in the sale. All equipment is in working order and maintained regularly. A large supply of spare parts are also on hand and kept current.
The power generation facility holds 3 generators plus an expansion slot for an additional one if needed and all the necessary equipment to supply reliable electrical power to all parts of the island. The generators are run on aviation fuel which is cheaper than diesel and eliminates the need for additional fuel tanks for the airplanes. Because fuel is one of the biggest operating costs for an out island resort, the power generation plant was designed so the generators are step up or down as necessary to minimize fuel consumption while providing enough power to meet varying demands.

The 60,000 liter fuel storage facility was designed and built by Shell Oil. It can hold a month's worth of fuel for the resort while running at full capacity.
There is a large laundry facility. This building is located near the airstrip and well away from guest areas.
The only private recompression chamber in the country is located on Katafanga to aid any SCUBA diver in need.

A 1.5 million liter water reservoir located at the island's mountaintop holds plenty of water. At 150 feet in elevation, the difference creates enough water pressure for all the guest units along the beach. The water system utilizes rain water catchment along with 100,000 liters per day of desalinated water. The desalination plant is located within the same building as the power generation facility.
Next to the water tank is an antenna tower capable of providing reliable radio and cellular service to the island. This system is enhanced by satellite technology as well.
Employee housing, capable of housing 200 employees, is located outside the normal guest traffic areas. This area is also completely self sufficient and will provide its own support system for the employees of the resort.

In addition to the entire island being a natural garden, the island also has a fully planted and maintained garden area that produces enough fruits and vegetables to easily cover all the guest's needs. Greenhouses are used to get vulnerable plants started which are then transplanted into the island's soil which is so fertile virtually anything grows in it.
In addition to utilizing the guests own catch, Katafanga will employ full-time fishermen to provide an unlimited supply of fresh daily seafood to the resort. Since there is no commercial fishing allowed in the area, the sea has an incredible amount of fish nearby.
Pigs are farmed on the island within a fenced area that has enough room to easily sustain the island indefinitely with pork. Fijian culture includes a celebration called a Meke, similar to a Hawaiian Luau, where a pig is wrapped in banana leaves and smoked for an entire day; there is dancing, singing, and feasting.
Shipping of supplies to and from the island is handled by a company owned by the the parent company of the resort. In addition to providing the shipping of supplies for Katafanga, the company will independently sustain itself through shipping contracts with other entities in Fiji.
All buildings around the island have dedicated septic systems capable of handling a far greater capacity than is expected. This increased capacity will aid in the biological activity of the septic system and lessen, if not totally eliminate, the need for any pumping of the tanks.

Housing, equally luxurious to the guest accommodations, is provided for the chef and the resort's general manager. Built just between the main complex and the guest bures, these villas will give them their own space. But, it also allows them to remain in close proximity to the guests so they can respond quickly if needed. Connected to these quarters is also a bure for visiting surgeons and a surgery facility to handle emergencies. It is anticipated that special getaways will be offered to qualified physicians around the world who will enjoy the resort for free in exchange for medical services on the island. These will be well equipped and maintained daily at the same level as guest accommodations. These will truly be some of the best employee quarters anyone could ask for.
This project is unique in the size and detail put into the creation of these facilities. Often it can be quite difficult to appreciate the effort and expense necessary to build the infrastructure on an island since much of the components are buried or behind the scenes. The components for Katafanga are expertly placed to blend into the environment and over-built for long life and exponential growth. Only through a personal tour can one truly appreciate the effort the owners have put into proper planning and implementation of the infrastructure for this island resort.
*The total cost of infrastructure only (i.e. power, roads, communications, sewage, etc.), which does not include the cost of the island acquisition or other operating expenses.
